My dog loves to hunt in hedges and I was wondering?

whether I could put a bell on his collar (like a cat) so I could hear whereabouts he is. It would also stop him from catching any more wildlife!
Would the bell annoy him or affect him in anyway?
He’s a Jack Russell Terrier X Border Terrier
Yeah, that is a good idea. Especially if you don’t know where he is. When they get a scent, their gone within seconds, so best to get one especially if your dog is a working dog, and their instinct to hunt for animals.
Being a responsible owner is not losing your dog and to be able to tell your dog what to do. Therefore a little bell will not affect him, his own safety comes first. My cocker spaniel has a tag on his half chain/half fabric collar, so it makes a noise while he’s in the hedges. It really does help.
Good luck and be a responsible owner.
You might try it. You didn’t say what kind of dog it is….a terrier? Large dog?
Sure its a great idea. It might annoy you more when he’s not in the hedge, but a bell is a good idea. Make sure its enclosed well in a casing that he cant get caught up in the hedge with it. It will alert the wildlife and will help you locate him too.
At first it may annoy him but he will get use to it.
Heh, my APBT does the same thing! He’s so big though, I can hear him as he pounces around. He doesn’t venture too far away from me anyways.
If he gets too far, I say "Get Upstairs" and he comes running and goes upstairs to the front door.
I agree with the others, a bell would work, just be sure he doesn’t get it caught up on anything. Also, make sure he can’t get the bell off the collar, he might try to play with it and swallow it!
I had a cat bell on my last female Basset. She was inclined to take off, and where she was, her brother was, so it worked well for both of them. In France, the Basset is often belled (I tried to get my hands on a French bell, but never managed it). If they don’t give tongue on a hot scent, a bell is very useful and I doubt it will annoy them, provided it’s not like Big Ben!! I never got the impression the cat-bell bothered my girl one bit.
Sure! You can buy different sizes from gundog suppliers over the internet. My neighbour has a guide dog and when he exercises&plays he wears a bell so my neighbour knows where he is-even in the forest!
